João Baptista Mendes Cardoso

Fico.jpg

João Baptista Mendes Cardoso, better known as Fico, is a self-taught artist from Espinho Branco, in Calheta de S. Miguel, Santiago island, Cape Verde.

Educated in the principles of oral tradition, without knowing school or written words, Fico follows the life models and traditions of his Rabelado ancestors. He dedicates himself to cattle breeding, agriculture and construction, painting and fine arts are a self-taught work that he explores and develops in his daily life. Occasionally, he also works in pottery.

He exhibited in S. Vicente and Santiago, Cape Verde, and participated in RabelArte international exhibitions, in France, Spain, Holland and Portugal.

With an identity forged in a situation marked by conflicts with the Church and the State, being Rabelado, or better said Revealed, the chosen one of Christ, was anchored and still is anchored in the fulfillment of a set of essential rituals: the djunta-mon ( joint), the use of the cross, the definition of intra-group alliances and the organization of work. Specificities that constitute strategies maintained by the Rabelados in order to preserve their identity.
